Guangxi University

Guangxi University (GXU), established in 1928, is the pioneering institution of higher education in Guangxi. As the region's most comprehensive university with the longest history and largest scale of operation, GXU stands as the only university in Guangxi designated under the national "Double First-Class" Initiative. It is jointly administered by the Ministry of Education and the People’s Government of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

GXU began enrolling master’s students in 1978, making it one of China's earliest institutions to resume postgraduate education following the national restoration of graduate programs. In 1998, it was authorized to confer doctoral degrees. Over more than four decades of development in degree and postgraduate education, the University has continuously expanded its range of academic disciplines, degree-granting programs, and postgraduate enrollment scale. With its inclusion in the "Double First-Class" Initiative and its status as a ministry-region co-developed university, GXU has entered a new phase of comprehensive and accelerated development.

Currently, GXU offers 19 first-level doctoral programs, 38 first-level master’s programs, 3 professional doctoral programs, and 26 professional master’s programs. These span eleven major disciplinary categories: Philosophy, Economics, Law, Education, Literature, Science, Engineering, Agriculture, Medicine, Management, and Arts. A diversified postgraduate education and training system has been established, encompassing both academic and professional degrees, doctoral and master’s levels, and full-time and part-time study modes.

As of December 2025, GXU has 19,234 postgraduate students enrolled, including 2,121 doctoral candidates and 17,113 master’s candidates. The university employs 579 doctoral supervisors and 1,576 master’s supervisors. Among the faculty are two full-time members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 69 recipients of major national talent awards, and 26 experts receiving special government allowances from the State Council. In recent years, GXU has intensified efforts to attract and cultivate high-level talent, strengthening its supervisory team and providing robust faculty support for postgraduate training. By 2025, the university had recruited 38 international experts and teachers from 13 countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Thailand, Vietnam, and Pakistan. Among them are 4 high-level talents, 19 postdoctoral researchers, 5 outstanding young scholars from ASEAN countries, and 10 language instructors and researchers.

GXU currently possesses 1 World-Class Construction Discipline, 2 ministry-region co-constructed first-class discipline clusters, 12 Guangxi first-class disciplines, and 14 postdoctoral research stations.
