Recently, the official website of the Nature Index released its latest rankings (covering the period from December 1, 2024 to November 30, 2025). Guangxi University(GXU) delivered an outstanding performance, climbing to 151st globally and 64th among universities in Chinese Mainland. Compared with its global ranking of 666th in 2021, at the beginning of the 14th Five-Year Plan, GXU has advanced 515 places, marking a historic best and reflecting a leap in its overall strength and core competitiveness.

The continued rise in the Nature Index ranking vividly demonstrates GXU’s steady progress in advancing its “Double First-Class” initiative. In recent years, the university has closely aligned its development with national strategies and the industrial needs of Guangxi, implementing a series of innovative measures and deepening comprehensive education reforms. Efforts have focused on building leading research teams and cultivating innovative talent, promoting interdisciplinary integration and organized scientific research, strengthening high-level research platforms, and leveraging artificial intelligence to empower research innovation.

These efforts have produced significant breakthroughs across multiple disciplines. At present, 12 disciplines at the university—including engineering, materials science, agricultural sciences, plant and animal sciences, and chemistry—have entered the top 1% of the Essential Science Indicators (ESI) global rankings. Among them, engineering and materials science have reached the top 0.1% globally, achieving a historic breakthrough for universities in Guangxi. High-impact research outputs continue to emerge, with papers published in leading international journals such as Nature and Science. Innovations including concrete-filled steel tube long-span arch bridge technology, next-generation X-ray polarization detector technology, green papermaking and environmental protection technologies, new high-yield sugarcane varieties producing one ton of sugar per mu, and high-purity gallium separation and purification technology have reached leading domestic and internationally advanced levels, providing strong support for major national engineering projects and regional economic and social development.

Looking ahead, GXU will continue to focus on breakthroughs in the Double First-Class initiative, actively serving Guangxi’s ten key modern manufacturing industries. It will further deepen education reform, strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration and coordinated innovation, tackle critical core technologies, and continuously enhance the efficiency of scientific innovation and technology transfer. These efforts aim to transform research achievements into powerful drivers of high-quality regional industrial development and accelerate the building of a Chinese-characteristic Double First-Class university firmly rooted in the Guangxi region, contributing greater wisdom and strength to national development strategies and the economic and social development of Guangxi.

It is reported that the Nature Index was first released in November 2014. By tracking research articles published in 145 leading international journals, including Nature, Science, and Cell, the index evaluates the research competitiveness of institutions across five core fields: chemistry, earth and environmental sciences, life sciences, health sciences, and physical sciences. It has since become a widely recognized global indicator for assessing the high-quality research output and collaboration of institutions, countries, and regions in the natural sciences.
